Mine disaster hearing set for May 24 in Beckley

Congressman Nick Rahall, D-W.Va., announced Monday that the House Education and Labor Committee, acting on his request to investigate the explosion at Massey Energy’s Upper Big Branch mine, has scheduled a hearing on the tragedy later this month in Beckley.

The hearing, titled “The Upper Big Branch Mine Tragedy: Testimony of Family Members,” is slated to take place at 9 a.m. Monday, May 24, in the Robert C. Byrd U.S. Courthouse, according to a release from Rahall’s office.

“This hearing will enable family members of the 29 miners killed in the explosion at Upper Big Branch to let the Congress know, in their own words, what they believe must be done to shore up our nation’s mine safety system,” Rahall said.

“I can think of no witnesses more capable of helping guide the Congress in this endeavor than these families.

“...I am grateful to Chairman George Miller, D-Calif., for working to bring the committee to southern West Virginia and for his dedicated efforts to improve mine safety.”
