An elderly Raleigh County woman is among six West Virginians who have been confirmed dead in connection with this week’s storm, said the Office of the State Medical Examiner.
Raleigh County Sheriff Steve Tanner says sheriff deputies responded Monday to a call reporting a person down in Crab Orchard and found an elderly woman outside her home.
Tanner said the woman’s family checked on her Sunday night, but that in an apparent state of confusion, she went out later to sweep leaves and was not properly clothed.
Tanner said the State Medical Examiner confirmed she died of exposure.
Neighbors discovered her body Monday morning. No foul play is suspected, said the sheriff. Her identity has not yet been released.
