Crescent, Maxwell Hill schools exemplary again

Crescent Elementary and Maxwell Hill Elementary schools in Raleigh County Schools have once again achieved Exemplary Accreditation Status by the West Virginia Office of Education Performance Audits.

Raleigh County Superintendent of Schools James Brown said the recognition demonstrates the tradition of excellence within the county.

“Both these schools perform extremely well and the hard work of teachers, the administrators and the students has yielded an outstanding result and we are proud of the work they have done.”

Theresa Lewis, principal at Crescent Elementary celebrated the achievement Thursday morning in a unique way: She kissed a pig.

Lewis said Crescent Elementary earned the status once before and now her students want to be the No. 1 school in the state. Crescent Elementary has also been recognized as a 1998-1999 WV School of Excellence and a 2005 National NCLB Blue Ribbon School.

“I’m proud of the students and teachers,” Lewis said. “The staff is committed and have high expectations. They believe every child can and will achieve.”

Lewis also credits parents who ensure their children attend school, assist with homework and show support for the school.

Maxwell Hill Elementary Principal Larry Farley says his school will in the near future mark the honor with students and parents. The school has earned exemplary status 10 of the past 11 years.

“It’s an honor for everyone connected to the school: Teachers, students, parents and the community as a whole,” Farley said. “It’s something we strive for each year.”

Farley credits the students for their “hard work”; teachers having high expectations for themselves and encouraging students to reach their potential; strong parent support, including volunteering and showing interest in their child’s education by attending parent-teacher conferences; and businesses always helping when asked.

“We have a wonderful community school,” Farley commented.

In order to earn exemplary status a school must have students achieving proficiency scores in all subjects and have an attendance rate at or above 94 percent in the most recent year for which data is available.

    After seeking outside legal guidance to determine whether Beckley Common Council could remove Mayor Emmett Pugh from office, Councilmen-at-Large Tim Berry and Cedric Robertson have recommended that no further action should be taken against the mayor.

    Although they have elected not to take action to remove the mayor from office, the two said according to their attorney, they had a right to do so.
