Bomb threat reported at Beckley-Stratton Middle School

BECKLEY — Local law enforcement officials conducted a search at Beckley-Stratton Middle School after a Thursday morning bomb threat forced officials to evacuate the facility.

Beckley Police Lt. J.C. McPeake said when the students arrived to school on a two-hour weather delay schedule, a student discovered a “vague” note with the threat in the bathroom. The student gave the note to a teacher.

The administration called transportation immediately to have the students evacuated to Woodrow Wilson High School auditorium. Police were then notified.

McPeake said a preliminary search of the building found no such threat, but a bomb dog also conducted a search and found nothing.

“The threat appears unfounded, but we will still conduct a full investigation,” McPeake said. “This is a serious crime.”

He said the scene was cleared and students were transported back to school around 12:30 p.m.

Miller Hall, Raleigh County Schools director of Secondary Education, said a full investigation will be conducted and if a suspect is found, he or she will be dealt with accordingly.

“Not only was this an inconvenience to students, but to the whole community. We want to have a safe environment.”

  • Beckley Council will take no further action against Pugh

    After seeking outside legal guidance to determine whether Beckley Common Council could remove Mayor Emmett Pugh from office, Councilmen-at-Large Tim Berry and Cedric Robertson have recommended that no further action should be taken against the mayor.

    Although they have elected not to take action to remove the mayor from office, the two said according to their attorney, they had a right to do so.
