Chamber dinner to feature Shelley Moore Capito

West Virginia’s Second District Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito will be the featured speaker for the 2013 Beckley-Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce annual dinner, which will be hosted April 19 at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center.

Chamber CEO and President Ellen Taylor said the reception will start at 5:30 p.m. and dinner will start at 6:30 p.m.

“We selected Shelley Moore Capito because we understand that she is going to run for the Senate seat that Jay Rockefeller is going to vacate,” Taylor said.

“We saw this as an opportunity for us to get to know her. She’s not really been active in this area, so it’s an opportunity for everyone to get to know her, because at some point in time, she will be on the ballot and we will have to vote for or against her.”

Taylor said this will be a great opportunity for the community to hear what’s going on in Washington and what Capito has to say.

“We’re looking forward to a good speech from her.”

During the Chamber dinner, the winner of the community service award will also be honored.

“We will name that individual pretty soon,” Taylor said.

Dinner attendees do not need to be members of the Chamber; Taylor said everyone is welcome to come.

Tickets are $55 each and table reservations for six, eight, or 10 may be made by calling Kip Buchanan at the Chamber at 304-252-7328. The table reservation fee is $25.

“We’re looking forward to a good evening. It’s a good networking opportunity.”

Taylor said people in the community who don’t know each other can connect at this event, and people who are new in business will have an excellent opportunity to meet the leadership in Beckley.

“Everyone can make new acquaintances and renew old ones. It’s a fun evening.”

Capito, a Republican and the daughter of former Gov. Arch Moore, is serving her sixth term in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The second district cuts a swath through mid-state from the Ohio River eastward to the Virginia border, as well as the rapidly growing residential communities in the Eastern Panhandle and Potomac Highlands.

Capito won in November claiming a landslide victory by a 70 percent majority — the largest in her career. She said two priorities in her sixth term in Congress are to tackle the fiscal crunch facing the nation and to “continue to stand up against the EPA’s dangerous and unconstitutional crusade to dictate our nation’s energy policy to the detriment of West Virginia.”
