BECKLEY —
From McBee’s Irish Pub to United Methodist Temple to Calacino’s Pizzeria, many people gathered to watch the New England Patriots battle against the New York Giants on Super Bowl Sunday.
Many fans did not have a preference as to which team won, but were simply out enjoying the annual event.
“I like the atmosphere, the food, and the big screen TV,” Tracy Speilman, a patron at McBee’s said.
“We’re here for Tom Brady,” Bethany Kirby jokingly added.
McBee’s was well-equipped for viewers with a huge screen in the dining area, multiple screens around the bar, and an additional screen in the brick dining room.
Calacino’s Pizzeria offered a special deal for game night — $25 bought a square on the board, which included admission for two people, hot dogs, chili, pizza, draft beer and a chance to win some cash.
Several guests at Calacino’s were hoping to see the Cowboys or the Steelers make it to the final round, but Josh Lester said he was happy “as long as Tim Tebow isn’t in it.”
He and his friends David Clere and Robbie Meadows try to get together every year to watch the game.
While some chose bars or restaurants for their game night venue, many others gathered at United Methodist Temple after Sunday evening services to watch the big game.
Youth Director Kassi Jo Farris said there was something for everyone. Multiple rooms were set up for Super Bowl coverage, video game playing, movie watching and nail painting for those less interested in the sporting event.
Both Chris Vaughn and Tyhler Cook were hoping for the Giants to win. They have both been a part of the church’s youth group, Club 633, for years.
Vaughn and Cook were excited about watching the big game at their church.
“It’s a great place to be with friends in a safe atmosphere,” Vaughn said.
While the boys were downstairs eating snacks and watching the game, several girls were upstairs getting their nails painted and watching movies.
Of those watching the commercials, many said the M&Ms commercial was their favorite.
Whether they watched for the commercials, for their favorite team, or simply to drool over Tom Brady, an estimated 144 million people tuned in to the 46th Super Bowl.
