15th annual Veterans Appreciation Day

FAYETTEVILLE — Friends, family and community members gathered Sunday at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Building to honor and pay tribute to our veterans.

The 15th annual Veterans Appreciation Day drew a huge crowd, and Boy Scouts were on site to distribute small American flags.

Judge John W. Hatcher Jr. welcomed everyone to the celebration as the Fayette County Junior ROTC presented the colors.

Veterans were asked to stand and be recognized for their noble service and honorable sacrifice.

Four veterans from the VA Medical Center in Beckley were brought to join in the celebration and they were recognized as well.

“This appreciation day is not hosted to glorify war, but to honor veterans for what they and their brave service mean to our beloved country,” Hatcher said.

He welcomed Lt. Col. Shane M. Sullivan to the podium to speak to the crowd.

Sullivan spoke of not only the sacrifices of the men and women who serve their country, but also the sacrifices of their families.

“On Veterans Day, I think of my wife, my mom and my kids and the challenges of having loved ones in the military.”

Sullivan’s mother was in the audience Sunday and he said she was a very brave woman, having brothers and a son who have served in the military.

“They are veterans in their own right, and we owe them a debt of gratitude.”

Lt. Col. James Akers also addressed the crowd, and patriotic musical selections were delivered by the Fayetteville Community Chorus.

    After seeking outside legal guidance to determine whether Beckley Common Council could remove Mayor Emmett Pugh from office, Councilmen-at-Large Tim Berry and Cedric Robertson have recommended that no further action should be taken against the mayor.

    Although they have elected not to take action to remove the mayor from office, the two said according to their attorney, they had a right to do so.
