SHADY SPRING —
Shady Spring Elementary fourth- and fifth- graders who earned “Triple A” status were rewarded with a special visit from Beckley’s first and only women’s flat track derby team, the Beckley Area Derby Dames.
A handful of the Dames, along with several referees, came to Shady Spring Elementary Friday to talk about the rules of roller derby, the importance of teamwork and how to show good sportsmanship.
After “Roller Derby 101,” the kids got to see some live derby action. The dames split into two teams, purple versus black.
The black team was comprised of April O’Kill, Shank N. Stein, Cupcake Cadaver, Rock-it-like-it’s-Hot, Peanut Buttkickher, Cup O Tea and Betta WarnHer. The purple team had Mitch Riot, Bodacious Baxter, Burn N Kell, St. Brawly Girl, Blonde Bruiser, Yula B. Hurtin’ and Malice in Rollerland.
Purple took the win with a final score of 103 to 74, but the crowd encouraged the black team during the final jam with cheers and chants.
Abigayle Donelow, 10, said she loved every part about the Derby Dames coming to visit her school.
St. Brawly Girl, the highest-scoring jammer of the scrimmage, was Abigayle’s favorite player.
She said she was rooting for the purple team Friday and she plans to come out to see the girls play in their upcoming bouts at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center.
Principal Penny Carrico said the derby visit was a reward for students in fourth and fifth grade who had achieved “Triple A” status, which stands for Attitude, Achievement and Attendance.
“We chose this within the local community. The Dames talked about the importance of teamwork, sportsmanship and working out.”
She said the school tries to choose something unique to reward the “Triple A” students with each six weeks.
Carrico was sporting a purple Beckley Area Derby Dames shirt Friday and she said she’s a big fan.
“The Derby Dames give so much back to the community.”
