Catch some NYC-themed one-acts at Beckley’s newest theater venue

BECKLEY — What does a girl who loved The Beatles have in common with three bachelors and a couple with marital problems? Their stories are being told today and Jan. 24-26 at the Raleigh Playhouse premiere stage production “534 Off-Broadway,” an evening of four one-act plays.

Artistic Director George Bickey explained that “534 Off-Broadway” is a series of one-act plays with strong, exciting characters living in New York City, which is 534 miles from the Raleigh Playhouse on Neville Street.

Each year thousands of individuals, young and old, are drawn to New York City for art and culture or for a chance to find themselves and make their own way in life. “534 Off-Broadway” is a sometimes humorous, sometimes sad look into the lives of several characters in New York as they get a new chance at life and try to resolve the conflicts in their day-to-day lives.

Bickey said the shows are connected, not only through the New York theme, but with a mixed media production using videos and voice-overs.

Around 160 individuals saw the show during its open weekend to a positive community reception, said Bickey.

Those wishing to attend the matinee at 4 p.m. today can see the show at a special $10 price.

Performances at 8 p.m. Jan. 24-26 will be the regular $20 price.

This play has some mild language.

Bickey also announced the upcoming auditions for “Doubt, a Parable” by John Patrick Shanley.

The audition will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 22-23 at the Hulett C. Smith Theater at Tamarack and will consist of a cold read from the script.

Performance dates are March 8 and 9 at Tamarack and March 15-17, 21-24, 28-30 at The Raleigh Playhouse and Theatre.
