Freezing temps with rain, snow or mix expected

— Approximately 2,400 Appalachian Power customers experienced power outages Thursday morning because of strong wind gusts, according to AEP spokesman Phil Moye.

Outages peaked at 9,500 Wednesday, then dropped to around 800 Wednesday night, but Moye said they added up again in the early hours Thursday.

AEP crews from Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee have come to the area to help restore power.

Moye was hopeful most of the outages would be restored by Thursday night.

Meanwhile, the weather for the weekend could be a bit unpredictable, according to meteorologist David Marsalek.

He said he is not expecting more than a couple inches of accumulation, but the temperatures will flirt with the freezing point.

Today, mild air will be coming from the southwest. Rain is expected for tonight, with a possible rain/snow mix for Saturday morning.

Depending on the temperature throughout the day, either rain or snow can be expected.

Marsalek said winds will blow in from the northwest Saturday night, bringing upslope snow showers.

“There is a little uncertainty with this one. It could be a curveball.”

He said temperatures are only expected to be in the upper 20s Sunday, but precipitation should come to an end.

    After seeking outside legal guidance to determine whether Beckley Common Council could remove Mayor Emmett Pugh from office, Councilmen-at-Large Tim Berry and Cedric Robertson have recommended that no further action should be taken against the mayor.

    Although they have elected not to take action to remove the mayor from office, the two said according to their attorney, they had a right to do so.
