Beckley family speaks out about son’s murder

Beckley Police are still actively investigating the March murder of Jeffrey Terrell Singleton, and his family is still mourning his loss.

His mother, Cynthia Tyree, his father, Tim Singleton, and his aunt, Terri Singleton, spoke with media Tuesday morning at the Beckley Police Department, urging anyone with further information about the murder to come forward.

“We’re trying to get someone to come forward so we can put this to rest,” Tim said. “We need closure.”

Cynthia described her son as an outgoing, athletic and loving young man.

“As a mother, I felt like I was his protector. I feel like I failed my child,” she said with tears streaming down her face.

Tim said the family is strong and life has to go on, but their lives will be forever changed.

“You never think about burying a child. Even though he was a grown man, he was still my baby.”

During the evening hours of March 3, Beckley Police and Beckley Fire Department responded to a “person down inside their residence” call in the Harlan Court area.

Upon entry of Singleton’s residence, police found the 22-year-old had died from multiple gunshot wounds.

Detective Cpl. M.G. Bragg said evidence suggested that Singleton had been dead for several hours before he was found. Evidence also indicated that robbery may have been a motive for the crime.

Police were able to secure a large amount of physical and trace evidence from the crime scene, which has been sent to the West Virginia State Police Lab for processing.

“We have had lots of good leads, just not one to break the case yet,” Bragg said. “We feel there are people out there with information due to the close proximity of neighbors and the suggested time of day for the crime.”

Bragg is urging anyone with information about this case to come forward — “It could be the piece of evidence that breaks the case.”
