Oak Hill officer shot; search on for suspect

An Oak Hill Police Officer was shot around 1 a.m. this morning and police are searching for the suspect in Whipple and surrounding areas.

According to information released by the Fayette County Sheriff's Office and the Oak Hill Police Department, Sgt. J.L. Kirk responded to an alarm in the area of Maple Court Apartments and was shot while attempting to make contact with an individual in the area.

Kirk was wearing a bullet proof vest, which prevented serious injury, but he was transported to Plateau Medical Center.

The suspect has been described as a black male with a dark complexion. He is medium height and medium to stocky build. His hair is loosely braided in corn rows or dreadlocks.

The suspect is considered to be armed with a small-caliber handgun or a .25 caliber semi-automatic pistol and is also considered dangerous.

  • Beckley Council will take no further action against Pugh

    After seeking outside legal guidance to determine whether Beckley Common Council could remove Mayor Emmett Pugh from office, Councilmen-at-Large Tim Berry and Cedric Robertson have recommended that no further action should be taken against the mayor.

    Although they have elected not to take action to remove the mayor from office, the two said according to their attorney, they had a right to do so.
