FAYETTEVILLE —
Early voting begins today statewide for special party primaries being held to take the first step in determining an eventual replacement for the late Sen. Robert C. Byrd.
An abbreviated early voting period will run today and Saturday of this week and Monday through Wednesday of next week. There will be no early voting on Sunday.
The special primaries to help fill the unexpired term left following Byrd’s June 28 death are planned for Saturday, Aug. 28. According to state and county election officials, the primaries will follow the same procedure as other elections, with polls opening at 6:30 a.m. and closing at 7:30 p.m.
The Senate race is the sole contest on the ballots.
The general election for the office will occur during the normally scheduled Nov. 2 balloting.
In Fayette County, registered voters can cast early ballots from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays through Wednesday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. this Saturday at the county courthouse.
“This election is set up like a normal primary would be,” County Clerk Kelvin Holliday said.
Holliday said a turnout of between 5 and 10 percent is predicted statewide.
Holliday says super precincts can be utilized in situations where different precincts vote at the same location. Four will be in play in Fayette, reducing the number of poll workers necessary in those situations from 40 to 28 and saving the state money in the process.
In Raleigh County, voting will be accepted on the same days from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with Saturday’s start a half-hour later at 9 a.m.
Candidates on the ballots include 10 Republicans, three Democrats and one from the Mountain Party. In order as listed on Secretary of State Natalie Tennant’s website, they are: Democrat — Ken Hechler, Sheirl Fletcher and Joe Manchin; Republican — Thomas Ressler, Harry Bruner Jr., Frank Kubic, John Raese, Daniel Rebich, Kenneth Culp, Albert Howard, Lynette Kennedy McQuain, Scott Williams and Mac Warner; and Mountain — Jesse Johnson.
Sen. Carte Goodwin, appointed earlier by Gov. Manchin, is serving in the post on a temporary basis until a winning candidate is declared in the November general election.
