Snow expected across region Friday

BECKLEY — With cold temperatures already in place, southern West Virginia could see 4 to 6 inches of snow Friday, and even more in higher elevations.

Tim Axford, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Charleston, said the temperatures will only reach a high of mid to upper 20s Friday, but winds should be mild.

Snow is expected to start falling around noon in Beckley, as the northwest system flows through the region. Axford said the accumulation is terrain dependent, but the majority will come in from early afternoon to late evening.

The timing of this snowfall will hit just as many residents are leaving work or school, so Axford said to take precautions.

Chris Fisher, a meteorologist with the NWS in Blacksburg, said most areas in Summers and Greenbrier counties should only receive 2 to 3 inches of snow, but that total could be greater in the higher elevations.

Snowfall should end between Saturday morning and midday, but the temperatures will stay just as cold in the mid-20s.

However, there is a ray of sunshine — temperatures will be in the mid-50s next week.
