Veterans Day Parade slated Monday in Beckley

Veterans, local organizations and community members will march together Monday for the annual Veterans Day Parade in uptown Beckley.

Frank Cook, adjutant and parade committee chairman, said the weather forecast looks good and the parade lineup is nearly complete.

Temperatures should be around 60 degrees and forecasters are not predicting any precipitation, Cook said.

He said several local bands will participate in the parade, and one float will be decorated as a candy factory.

Judges for the floats will be Myra Harper, Linda Carr, Lee Ann Miles and Robin Waddell.

Special guest will be Gen. Charles Viet, assistant adjutant general from the State Adjutant’s Office. Viet will speak at the “Soup and Sandwiches” event at American Legion Post 32 following the parade.

The parade will begin at 11 a.m. with the national anthem, by Allisha Dafron, a 10th-grade student at Liberty High School.

Several Boy Scouts will be distributing 500 American flags as the national anthem is performed.

Following the American Legion Honor Guard will be this year’s grand marshal, John Martin.

Martin, a Korean veteran and member of American Legion Post 32, said he is very excited about the parade and has been attending them for the past 12 years.

“I think everyone should come out and honor our veterans,” Martin said. “It looks like the parade lineup will be pretty good.”

    After seeking outside legal guidance to determine whether Beckley Common Council could remove Mayor Emmett Pugh from office, Councilmen-at-Large Tim Berry and Cedric Robertson have recommended that no further action should be taken against the mayor.

    Although they have elected not to take action to remove the mayor from office, the two said according to their attorney, they had a right to do so.
