Fire Prevention “Dalmatians” Sparky and Spunky teach students in Andrea Hall’s fifth-grade class about fire safety Wednesday at Coal City Elementary School in Sophia. Firefighters from Coal City, Sophia Area and Sophia City fire departments teamed up for Fire Prevention Week to help kindergarten through fifth-grade students understand the importance of planning and practicing two ways to escape a fire in their home, how to phone 911 with their home address in an emergency, and that working smoke detectors can help alert them to a fire so they can get out of their home and gather with their family at a predetermined meeting place. Sparky and Spunky were played by Anthony Bell and Scott Thomas, both Sophia City firefighters.
