— The City of Oak Hill is now offering reward money for information in the Thursday shooting of a city police officer.

“The City of Oak Hill will match any reward paid by Crime Stoppers for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual responsible for shooting Cpl. Chris Young,” Oak Hill Police Chief Mike Whisman said in a press release.

Young has been placed on paid leave while he recovers from the shooting, Whisman said.

The suspect is believed to be a tall, heavy-set black male who was last seen driving a “large dark-colored vehicle with Ohio tags,” authorities said.

Young was conducting a routine traffic stop at about 4:30 a.m. on W.Va. 61 a mile north of Oak Hill when the suspect got out of his vehicle, produced a hand gun and fired twice at Young, police reported. One bullet struck his cruiser’s door and the other the base of his sternum. Young was wearing a bullet-proof vest which saved his life.

Those with information or who see suspicious activity are urged to call the local 911 center or the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department at 304-574-4304, the Oak Hill City Police at 304-465-0597 or Crime Stoppers at 304-255-7867.
