Conference set in ethics probe for Mayor Pugh

BECKLEY — After being postponed twice, staff from the West Virginia Ethics Commission has scheduled a status conference for Feb. 18 at noon for Beckley Mayor Emmett Pugh, who is accused of violating the Ethics Act by using his public office for private financial gain.

Pugh is charged with nine counts of ethics violations, including use of public office for private gain, accepting improper gifts, use of a public office for private gain for another person and prohibited interest in public contracts.

The complaint alleges that Pugh was rewarded with interest in companies in exchange for providing public contracts with the city of Beckley.

At the Feb. 18 conference, a date will be set for the public hearing in Beckley on the charges against Pugh. He has denied wrongdoing.

  • Beckley Council will take no further action against Pugh

    After seeking outside legal guidance to determine whether Beckley Common Council could remove Mayor Emmett Pugh from office, Councilmen-at-Large Tim Berry and Cedric Robertson have recommended that no further action should be taken against the mayor.

    Although they have elected not to take action to remove the mayor from office, the two said according to their attorney, they had a right to do so.
