WVU to receive $1 million to study animal health

West Virginia University will receive slightly more than $1 million to study animal heath, reproduction, breeding, genetics and nutrition.

The funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture is part of $24 million in grants awarded to universities across the country.

Institute Director Roger Beachy says the money will help the United States remain competitive while facing increasing challenges from animal diseases, reduced fertility, low nutrition and growth and nontariff trade barriers.

He also noted that the agriculture animal industry accounted for 42 percent of forecast U.S. agricultural receipts in 2009.
