MORGANTOWN —
A nonprofit group that promotes alternative energy in Appalachia has donated a solar array for Morgantown’s new farmers’ market.
Aaron Sutch of the Mountain Institute said Morgantown Market Place will be West Virginia’s first solar-powered farmers’ market. The array on the new pavilion should be completed in March and will include an electric vehicle charging station.
The array has 12 panels with a capacity of more than 3 kilowatts.
The project was developed with two West Virginia companies, the Downstream Strategies environmental consulting group in Morgantown and Mountain View Solar of Berkeley Springs.
Sutch said the market is a great way to demonstrate clean, locally produced energy.
The farmers’ market is open every Saturday morning from May through October, and some winter weekends.

At least 200 union workers picketed FirstEnergy’s annual shareholder meeting in West Virginia on Tuesday, demanding the Ohio-based utility hire enough people to keep the power on without forcing an ever-shrinking labor force to work as many as 1,800 hours of overtime a year.
