Colleges get Bucks for Brains

CHARLESTON — West Liberty and Concord universities are each getting $100,000 grants from the state’s Research Trust Fund.

Gov. Joe Manchin says West Liberty will use its grant to launch a campaign to fund student stipends and purchases of high-end instrumentation.

Concord’s grant will be used to implement a summer undergraduate research initiative for science and mathematics majors.

The Legislature created the trust fund, also known as Bucks for Brains, in 2008 to support research at Marshall and West Virginia universities.

The schools have five years to raise matching funds.

Interest earned on the fund’s account is awarded to other state colleges and universities as matching grants.
