CHARLESTON — About 70,000 phone numbers with West Virginia’s new area code have been set aside for use but some carriers say there’s been no need to assign them.
The 681 area code went into effect in late March.
Carolyn Barr with Citynet says her company’s inventory still has thousands of numbers with the original 304 area code.
Barr says she doesn’t expect Citynet to assign any numbers with the 681 area code for at least a year.
Verizon Wireless also hasn’t assigned any numbers with the 681 area code. Spokeswoman Laura Merritt says there’s been no need so far.
