Ohio County sheriff’s Lt. Kevin Goode says he’s seen a lot of strange things while on patrol, but finding an owl stuck on a vehicle’s roof is a first.
Goode says he saw the owl on the roof of a sport utility vehicle Tuesday evening while patrolling Interstate 70. He initially thought it was a small turkey.
The deputy stopped the driver. The man said he had heard a thud but didn’t think anything of it.
Goode says the bird’s right wing and right portion of its body were wedged underneath the brace of the SUV’s luggage rack.
He called animal control officers to free the owl, which he estimated weighed 8 to 10 pounds. They planned to take the bird to a local zoo but it died later that night.
