Bow seasons for deer, bear to start Sept. 28

SOUTH CHARLESTON — Archery seasons for West Virginia’s white-tailed deer and black bear are right around the corner. Both open Sept. 28.

Bow season for deer runs through Dec. 31.

The Division of Natural Resources says bear season is split: The first part ends Nov. 23. Then it resumes Dec. 9 through Dec. 31.

Wildlife Resources Chief Curtis Taylor says the black bear population continues to grow, and the DNR believes it’s strong enough to support a longer season.

The DNR has also increased the bag limit on deer this year, allowing hunters to take as many as two deer in one day. But only one of those can be antlered.

In the four archery-only counties — Logan, McDowell, Mingo and Wyoming — hunters can kill either one buck and one antlerless deer or two antlerless deer.
