An $8 million project to replace pre-World War II water lines in McDowell County could go out for bids in the fall.
The project will provide water service to about 250 customers in Maybeury, Switchback and Elkhorn.
McDowell County Public Service District general manager Mavis Brewster tells the Bluefield Daily Telegraph that the communities’ existing water systems have been in use since the 1930s.
The project also includes construction of a new water treatment plant and a new water storage tank also will be constructed.
It’s the first phase of a planned four-phase project to extend water service from the Mercer-McDowell county line to Kimball. Funding for the other phases is still being sought.
