Group to study achievement in middle schools

CHARLESTON (AP) — Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin is encouraging a newly established commission to make recommendations on raising student achievement in West Virginia middle schools.

Tomblin tasked the 19-member Governor’s Commission on Middle Grades to study best practices and develop recommendations by the middle of January.

Members of the Southern Regional Education Board presented middle grades research to the commission at a meeting Tuesday.

Tomblin established the commission as part of his education reform initiative. He told the group that research shows middle school is the time when many students are at a critical crossroads.


W.Va. awards grants for litter control programs

CHARLESTON (AP) — The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection is awarding grants to help fund litter control programs.

The state agency said Tuesday that 26 applicants have been approved for a total of $63,195 in grants. The money was awarded to state solid waste authorities, county commissions and municipalities.

It will help pay for the razing of dilapidated structures, fund community cleanups in places, and pay for trash receptacles and other supplies for litter control.


Barker named to W.Va. House of Delegates seat

CHARLESTON (AP) — Danville town manager Josh Barker has been appointed to a House of Delegates seat from the 22nd District.

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin announced the Democrat’s appointment.

Barker fills the unexpired term of Lincoln County Delegate Josh Stowers, who resigned to take a job as deputy to the state treasurer. He was among three candidates whose names were forwarded by a district committee to Tomblin.

He attended Marshall University and earned a certificate in oil and gas well management from Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College.
