Mingo County grand juror jailed for leaking charges
A Mingo County woman is in jail for tipping off peoples about indictments while serving on a county grand jury.
Media outlets report that 21-year-old Leanna Richardson of Marrowbone received a 10-day jail sentence Tuesday for contempt of court.
Mingo County prosecutor Michael Sparks tells WSAZ-TV that one person told investigators that Richardson told her she was being indicted. Two other people also knew they were being indicted but they didn’t tell investigators how they obtained the information.
Sheriff Eugene Crum says leaking grand jury information puts people’s lives in danger.
Wheeling Island, breeders spar about dog races
State regulators want Wheeling Island Hotel, Casino and Racetrack and greyhound breeders to settle a dispute over how many races are held at the track.
The Charleston Daily Mail reports that the West Virginia Racing Commission ruled at a special meeting Tuesday that Wheeling Island must hold 109 races a week. The decision reversed a January ruling requiring 115 races.
But the commission also told the racetrack and the West Virginia Kennel Owners Association to work out a compromise by the commission’s meeting in March.
The association’s attorney, Phil Reale, criticized the racetrack for not complying with the January ruling.
Wheeling Island president and general manager Jim Simms said the racetrack needs to reduce the number of races to remain solvent.
