Govs seek more time to apply for federal ed grants

CHARLESTON — The governors of West Virginia and eight other states want more time to reapply for federal education grants.

States face a June 1 deadline for the next round of Race to the Top funding.

The nine governors have asked U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan to either give them an extra month or speed up the release of their scores from the first round.

Gov. Joe Manchin vowed to convene a special session to ensure the state wins funding in the second round. Virginia, California, Connecticut, Kansas, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Oregon and South Dakota joined in the request.
