Reports: Marshall’s Jones heading to UCF

National media reports indicate Herd coach has accepted position

HUNTINGTON — HUNTINGTON - Marshall men’s basketball coach Donnie Jones has accepted Central Florida’s offer to become its new head coach, multiple national media outlets are reporting.

Jones’ name surfaced last week among candidates to replace Kirk Speraw, who was fired earlier this month after 17 years at UCF. He had denied being contacted by UCF in state outlets.

A Point Pleasant native, Jones took over at Marshall in 2006. He led the Thundering Herd to a 16-14 record, the team’s first winning season in seven years.

Marshall was 24-10 this season, which ended last week with a loss to Appalachian State in the quarterfinals of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. It was the Herd’s first postseason appearance since the National Invitation Tournament in 1988.

Jones’ record in three seasons at Marshall is 55-41.
