Dunlevy heads Class AA all-state volleyball team

PARKERSBURG — A trio of players, led by captain Rainelle Dunlevy of Oak Glen, earned repeat status on the Class AA all-state volleyball team, which was announced today by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association.

As a junior last year, Dunlevy helped the Golden Bears of head coach Ethel Riser win the Class AA championship. This season the first team all-state senior captain produced more than 300 kills and 100 blocks en route to helping Oak Glen make the state tournament again before falling in the semifinals to eventual runner-up Frankfort.

Also joining Dunlevy as repeat first-team picks were junior Hallie Gunnoe of Summers County and sophomore Allison DeLancey of Ritchie County.

The Bobcats from Summers County reached the state field, but were ousted in the quarterfinals by Ritchie County, which went on to capture the school’s second state volleyball title.

DeLancey, who helped the Rebels make the 2008 state tournament only to lose to Frankfort in the first round, finished with 291 points, 54 aces, 50 blocks, 77 digs and a team-high 441 downed spikes.

Ritchie County first-year head coach Katrina White’s squad from Ellenboro was the only program to place more than one netter on the first team unit.

Joining DeLancey was fellow teammate Tabitha Ezell, the Rebels’ senior setter.

Ezell, aside from putting up nearly 2,500 sets, proved to be a solid asset at the service line as she produced 127 aces. Ezell also added 397 service points, 26 kills and 88 digs.

Head coach Larry Castle’s Rebels from Tolsia didn’t win its opening round game against Frankfort, but it was the first time in school history for the program to make the state tournament field.

Senior setter Kara Pollinger was recognized for her efforts and picked up first team accolades. Pollinger, also a first team all-state pick in basketball at point guard, was considered by her coach to be the quarterback of the team and, “possibly the best player in the state.”

Frankfort senior hitter Alieshia Porter and junior setter Sarah McCauley of Philip Barbour also were named to the first team. McCauley, a third place finisher at the state cross country meet, registered more than 600 assists, 150 points and 70 kills for the Colts, who made the state semifinals.

Two players — Liberty Harrison senior Casey Jarvis and Ravenswood junior Nicole Sadecky — joined the first team after being second team picks in 2008.

Jarvis finished the year with 73 aces and averaged 5.6 kills a set. Sadecky produced 74 aces, 172 blocks, 389 kills and also had 670 sets for the Red Devils.

Rounding out the first team was Independence sophomore Alyssa Hunt, who served at 92 percent and finished with 94 blocks and 280 kills.

Heather Suter of Tyler Consolidated was selected as the captain of the second team.

Also earning second-team honors were Ritchie County’s Brittnay Spencer, Liberty Raleigh’s Mireya Cangemi, Sherman’s Madison Bowman, Jade McDaniel of James Monroe, Oak Glen’s Mackenzie Bailey, Frankfort’s Katie Bush, Ellie Stapleton of Wayne, Ashley Durnal of Philip Barbour and Tolsia’s Larissa Newsome.
