Concord's Brown earns WVIAC honors


Concord University’s Jolysa Brown is the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women’s basketball player of the week.

Brown, a 6-foot sophomore center from Hinton, led the way in Concord’s 3-0 start by averaging 20 points, 10.7 rebounds, 2.7 blocks, and 2.3 assists per contest.

The former Summers County High School standout and 2008 West Virginia high school player of the year posted a career-best total with 32 points in a win over Davis & Elkins. She also grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds and added 18 points in a victory over Bluefield College.

For the week, Brown hit on 20 of 30 field goal attempts and was also nearly perfect from the foul stripe, making 20 of 21 charity tosses.

Darren Jones of West Virginia State University was the WVIAC men’s player of the week.

The 5-9, senior guard from Cleveland averaged 27.5 points, 6.5 assists, 4.0 rebounds, and 4.0 steals per game as the Yellow Jackets opened with victories over Hillsdale (103-86) and Salem International (114-78).

Another top effort saw Wyoming East grad Justin Caldwell average 23.5 points in two losses for West Virginia Wesleyan.
