ORLANDO, Fla. — Rocky Ross’ 1-yard touchdown catch with 23 seconds remaining gave UCF a 21-20, come-from-behind win over Marshall Sunday night.
Marshall (5-4, 3-2 Conference USA) led most of the game, including 20-7 in the fourth quarter. The Knights made it 20-14 on Brynn Harvey’s 2-yard touchdown run, but turned the ball over on downs at the Marshall 18 with 2:45 remaining.
The Thundering Herd, trying to run out the clock on the ensuing possession, made its biggest mistake. Quarterback Brian Anderson ran for three yards after his exchange to Darius Marshall was botched. Anderson fumbled as he was going down and the Knights’ Josh Robinson recovered the ball at the Marshall 30 with 2:12 left.
UCF quarterback Brett Hodges completed a 19-yard pass to Kamar Aiken on third-and-10 from the 20 to set up first-and-goal at the 1.
After a Marshall timeout, Ross was left uncovered and was an easy target for Hodges.
Nick Cattoi’s PAT gave UCF (5-3, 3-2) its only lead of the game.
Marshall finished with 80 yards and a touchdown. He went over 1,000 yards for the second straight season.
The Herd is off this week before hosting Southern Miss on Saturday, Nov. 14. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m.
