Brown enjoying family time

Troy Brown is now officially in family mode.

The former Marshall All-American and record-setting New England Patriots receiver retired from the National Football League in September. He now is spending his newfound free time with his wife Kim and their two sons, Sir’mon and SaanJay.

Brown has been in Beckley this weekend, watching Sir’mon play for the Huntington YMCA fifth-grade team at the 37th annual Wendy’s/YMCA Biddy-Buddy All-Star basketball tournament.

“(Retirement) is going pretty good,” he said Saturday at Van Meter Gymnasium. “I’m enjoying the kids and chasing them around, a lot more than I had in the past.”

Brown left indelible marks at both Marshall and New England. He was an Associated Press Division I-AA All-American for the Thundering Herd. As a receiver/kick returner, he averaged a touchdown every eight times he touched the football, and as a senior had 101 catches for 1,654 yards and 16 touchdowns.

He was selected in the eighth round of the 1993 NFL draft and finished his career as the Patriots’ all-time leading receiver with 557 career catches. He is second with 6,366 receiving yards.

Brown’s duties as dad keep him from missing football.

“They take up a lot of my time,” he said. “I haven’t had too much time to think about it.”

Brown isn’t completely out of the Patriots’ circle. He travels back and forth from his Huntington home to Boston as a television analyst for Comcast Sportsnet.

Some Marshall fans voiced their support for Brown as a potential assistant to current head coach Mark Snyder. That’s something Brown doesn’t see happening any time soon.

“No, I haven’t really thought about it,” he said. “It’s a great time to be around my kids. I have to be ready for that (kind of) commitment.”

Also watching the Huntington YMCA team was Mark Gale, Marshall’s director of football operations. He was in attendance with his wife, Carol, and their oldest daughter, Caitlin.

Their youngest daughter, Chelsea, is one of Sir’mon’s teammates.
