Shady rallies to 18-14 win

The Sherman Tide rolled into Shady Spring Friday night with the hopes of spoiling the Tigers’ homecoming festivities.

But a strong third-quarter performance by the Tigers managed to turn the Tide in the opposite direction.

After falling behind 14-0 in the first half, the Tigers scored three touchdowns in the third quarter to take an 18-14 victory behind a strong running performance by Eric Lucas, who rushed for 190 yards and scored two touchdowns. In all, the Tigers moved the football for a total of 285 yards.

After a lackluster first-half performance, the Tigers scored on their first possession of the second half on a one-yard run by Lucas with 5:15 left in the third quarter.

The Tigers struck again with 3:31 left in the third quarter on a 1-yard quarterback keeper by Josh Weeks.

Later, the Tigers recovered a Sherman fumble with 3:14 left in the quarter. Lucas then scrambled for a 36-yard touchdown run with 3.06 remaining in the period.

The Tide, meanwhile, scored in the first half with a 36-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Colby Treadway to Tyler Boulet. The extra point kick was good.

Then, with 5:40 left in the second quarter, the Tide scored again.

Shady missed an opportunity to score with less than 10 seconds remaining in the first half when quarterback Weeks failed to connect with Walter Patten.

Shady scored on the opening drive of the second half, however, with the one-yard run by Lucas. The point after was blocked; the Tigers got another chance on a penalty but still were unable to convert for the extra point.

After Weeks scored on a quarterback sneak with 3.31 left in the third quarter, the two-point conversion attempt again failed to materialize.

The Tigers recovered a fumble with 3:14 left in the third quarter. Lucas then scored on a 28-yard run with 3.06 left in the period. Again, the two-point conversion attempt failed.

At halftime ceremonies, senior Krystle Goodson was named homecoming queen for 2008. She was escorted by senior Josh Groft.

Shady Spring, which improved its record to 5-2, next week will take on Scott at home.

Sherman’s season record dropped to 1-5.
