WVU’s Fowler top Big East defensive player

MORGANTOWN — West Virginia University women’s soccer player Kelsey Fowler was named Big East Defensive Player of the Week Monday.

She is the fourth straight Mountaineer to earn the conference’s weekly defensive honor following their 1-0-1 week. The Wheeling native anchored a backline that did not allow a goal in two league contests.

Fowler and the Mountaineer defense held St. John's to just two shots on-goal in 110 minutes of play in a 0-0 tie on Sept. 25. WVU held Syracuse without a shot on-goal and kept the Orange scoreless in an 8-0 win on Sept. 28. The Mountaineers earned their seventh and eighth shutouts of the season last week.

West Virginia (7-1-3, 2-0-1) plays at Seton Hall (4-5-1, 0-3-0) Friday.
