LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Three Mountain State University athletes have been named player of the week in their sports by the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Forward Alex Cottle, a 6-foot sophomore from Beckley and a native of Kiev, Ukraine, is the men’s soccer offensive player of the week.
Cottle was involved on both goals in the Cougars’ 2-0 win over Tennessee Wesleyan Saturday. His header proved to be the game winner in the 20th minute. He also assisted on Daniel Smith’s goal later in the first half.
Smith, a 6-2 freshman defender from London, England, is the men’s soccer defensive player of the week. He led the backline to a shutout in addition to scoring the goal against Tennessee Wesleyan.
Jennifer Baltrym completes the trifecta, earning volleyball player of the week honors.
The 6-2 senior middle hitter from Kissimmee, Fla., had 30 kills in victories over Carlow University (3-2), Bluefield College (3-1) and Cincinnati Christian (3--0).
Baltrym’s highest total came against Carlow — 12 kills along with nine assists. She now leads the KIAC in kills with 68.
MSU’s volleyball team, now 4-4, hosts the University of the Cumberlands at 1 p.m. Saturday.
The men’s soccer team will look to even its mark at 2-2 when it hosts Bluefield College at 8 p.m. Thursday.
The Cougar women’s soccer team, also 1-2, hosts Milligan College at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
