Roundup: Sloan named NAIA Regon 12's top player

Sloan named NAIA Region 12’s top player

Mountain State University outfielder-infielder Jennifer Sloan has been named Softball Player of the Year by NAIA Region 12.

Sloan batted .490 in 47 games for the Cougars. She had 75 hits in 153 at-bats while striking out just four times.

The former Woodrow Wilson standout also scored 57 runs and had 21 RBIs. Her slugging percentage was .542.

Sloan was also the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference 2008 Player of the Year and earned similar accolades for both Region 12 and the KIAC in volleyball.

Pitcher Sarah Rapp, second baseman Lauren Howell and third baseman Anna Kincaid join Sloan on the all-Region 12 softball squad.

The West Virginia Rapids u-9 boys soccer team won the championship Sunday at the Darrell Moore Memorial Tournament.

The Rapids’ u-10 team had a 2-1 record.



n Fast-pitch softball league forming

Teams are being accepted for the Warren Williams Women’s Fast Pitch Softball League at Warren Williams Stadium on Park Avenue. Girls 16 and older through college can play.

Greenbrier East boys soccer fundraiser

The Greenbrier East High School boys soccer team is sponsoring a Longaberger Basket Bingo from 6-11 p.m. May 30 at the Fairlea Volunteer Fire Hall.

Monetary donations are being accepted to purchase Longaberger baskets to be awarded as prizes. Each business or patron will be recognized as the basket is awarded.

Items are also being accepted to be used as door prizes to be given out throughout the evening.

The proceeds will be used for equipment, uniforms, and transportation for the Men’s Soccer Team.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

WVU bows to Youngstown, 13-9

MORGANTOWN – Youngstown State outlasted West Virginia 13-9 on Monday evening in a non-conference baseball game at Hawley Field. What was originally scheduled as a doubleheader was changed to one nine-inning contest.

The visiting Penguins (20-30) scored twice in the first inning, five times in the third and three more runs in the fourth to mount an early 10-0 lead. The Mountaineers (35-16) battled back to within 11-9, scoring four runs in each of the fifth and seventh innings and once in the sixth.

Eric Marzec, Youngstown’s designated hitter, slammed three home runs and a single, scored four runs and had six RBIs. Teammate Anthony Porter also hit a round-tripper.

Outfielder Austin Markel led WVU with a home run and two singles. Justin Parks and Tyler Kuhn had two hits and two RBIs each, while Mark Dvoroznak chipped in two hits and batted in one run.

WVU ends the regular season in a three-game Big East series at Cincinnati, beginning Thursday.

    Athletic Director Oliver Luck said the terms of the deal were confidential and WVU wouldn’t release details. But Luck said no state, taxpayer, tuition or other academic dollars will be used in the settlement.
