n Five earn Toughman Contest titles

Two champions successfully defended their titles and three new champions were crowned at the 29th annual Southern West Virginia Toughman Contest Saturday night at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center.

Beckley’s Shannon Dickens defeated Ronceverte’s Stephen Simmons to retain his heavyweight title, while Mount Hope’s Matt Craddock stopped Sophia’s Jeffrey Clifton to continue his reign in the light heavyweight division.

Beckley’s Ronald Martin was crowned as the middleweight champion after defeating Webster Springs’ Derrick O’Dell.

Mullens’ Mallory Grogg defeated Beckley’s Linda Bragg to claim the women’s heavyweight title, while fellow Mullens fighter Melanie McGraw captured the lightweight championship with a win over Ronceverte’s Amanda Serreno.



n FCA Trip to NBA game planned

The South Central West Virginia Fellowship of Christian Athletes has 16 tickets remaining for an April 5 trip to see the Charlotte Hornets host the Boston Celtics.

The bus will leave the Harper Road Krogers at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday with a stop at the Princeton Wal-Mart (2:05 p.m.) to pick up students and also one stop for dinner.

Cost for students/huddle coaches and chaperones is $40. Price for adults not chaperoning FCA huddles is $55.

Cost includes lanyard and Bobcat credentials with floor access after the game. Tipoff is 7 p.m.

Students will be dropped off at Princeton (12:45 a.m.) and Harper Road Krogers (1:30 a.m.).

BUCKHANNON — Brock Hyre drove in three runs as Buckhannon-Upshur defeated Nicholas County.

Tyler Clevenger was 2-for-4 for the Grizzlies (0-2), who host Greenbrier West at 5:30 p.m. today.
