Roundup: Fayetteville downs Woodrow 5-1


PREP BASEBALL

Fayetteville 5, Woodrow Wilson 1

FAYETTEVILLE — Alex Preast scattered five hits, striking out five batters and walking none, as the Pirates took the win.

Troy Hopkins, John Blankenship and Ryan Elkins backed Preast with two hits apiece.

Jimmy Earp doubled and Derek Stegal had a run-scoring single for the Flying Eagles.

Fayetteville hosts Valley at 4:30 p.m. today in a game originally scheduled to be played at the Greyhounds’ field.



James Monroe 17, Shady Spring 6

LINDSIDE — The Mavericks batted around in the second inning, scoring nine runs on three doubles and three singles, to overpower the Tigers.

Chris Frazier had three hits in the game, including a home run, and drove in four runs. Brian Belcher, John Ballangee and Jared Terry added two hits apiece in support of Logan Ray’s five-hit pitching. Ray struck out eight batters and walked two.

Shady Spring got a home run from Tyler Lucas and two singles from Mack Gilliam.

James Monroe (3-1) hosts Wyoming East today while Shady Spring (1-2) is at Summers County.



Oak Hill 19, Bluefield 2

BLUEFIELD — Oak Hill exploded for 10 runs in the fourth inning of a five-inning rout Thursday.

Chris Chapman hit a home run, knocked in four runs and scored two, Aaron McComas went 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs, Frankie McGraw collected two doubles, two RBIs and scored a run and Tyler Oliver doubled and scored four runs to lead the offensive onslaught.

Chase Joyner went 2-for-2 with an RBI for Bluefield.

Oak Hill (7-0) plays at Clay County at 7 p.m. today.



Mount View 9, Iaeger 8

WELCH — The Golden Knights rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning to down Iaeger for their first win of the season.

Doug Denton and Travis Day had three hits apiece to lead Mount View and Brandon Clemins knocked in two runs.

Kurt Lester went 2-for-2 with two RBIs for the Cubs.

Mount View (1-3) hosts PikeView at 5:30 p.m. today.



PREP SOFTBALL

Summers County 6, James Monroe 2

HINTON — Freshman Charlene Garrett struck out six James Monroe batters as she recorded her first varsity win.

Kara Wood powered the Bobcats’ attack with four hits, including a double. Keisha Cole added two singles.

Jade McDaniel and Christy Gravely each had two hits for James Monroe.

Summers (1-6) plays at Oak Hill at 4 p.m. today.
