Szekely named new manager of P-Rays

Joe Szekely was named new manager of the Princeton Rays on Tuesday, replacing longtime manager Jamie Nelson.

Szekely is entering his 24th year of professional baseball and his fourth in the Tampa Bay organization. He most recently managed the Vero Beach Devil Rays, who went 59-79 in 2007.

Prior to joining the Rays, Szekeley spent six seasons with the Kansas City Royals organization, including the Charleston Alley Cats in 2000.

Pitching coach Marty DeMerritt and hitting coach Rafael Deleon return to the Princeton staff. Last year, Princeton pitchers set single-season franchise records for shutouts (6) and least runs allowed (303).

Hector Torres has been with the Rays since 2005 and will make his first stop in Princeton next summer.

Nelson, the Princeton manager from 2003-07, will remain with the franchise as the roving minor league catching instructor.
