Mountain State loses exhibition at Morehead

MOREHEAD, Ky. — Mountain State University battled mightily but came up short in a 76-72 exhibition loss to Morehead State Thursday night at Morehead.

Trailing by as many as 17 points in the second half, Mountain State staged a furious comeback attempt and trailed by only two with less than a minute remaining.

“Our kids didn’t quit,” MSU coach Bob Bolen said. “I give them credit. They were quicker than we were on the boards (a 47-29 lead in that category). I’m disappointed because thought we had a chance to win.”

Division I Morehead made the plays down the stretch to pull out the victory.

The Cougars trailed 43-37 at the half, behind James Spencer’s 4-of-5 showing from three-point range.

The wing would finish with a game-high 28 points. He ended 4-of-10 from three-point range. He also had five rebounds.

Ralph Legg came off the bench and added 14 points while Adron Marshall added 10.

“(Spencer) hit some big shots and Ralph Legg came off the bench and gave us a spark,” Bolen said. “Even though it’s an exhibition game, it’s disappointing, because we had a chance to win it.”

Jamyron Steward had 20 points to lead Morehead. John Lamb had 12 and Leon Buchanan and Maze Stallworth had 11 each.

Mountain State (1-0) returns to regular-season action when it faces West Virginia Wesleyan Saturday at 4 p.m.
