Mutter headed to Glenville State
For Greenbrier East’s Tommy Mutter, going to Glenville State will be like starting over. Literally.
The former Spartan two-way grid standout recently signed a letter-of-intent to continue his career at Glenville.
“I think I’m the only person in my school who is going to college there,” Mutter said. “So it’s going to be a new experience. I’m really looking forward to it.”
He’s also hoping to see some playing time next fall as a freshman.
“The first-line guys are already set,” Mutter said. “But coach (Alan Fiddler) said everything else is open. I’m hoping to report in great shape and possibly grab one of those second-team spots. If I can do that, I should see some playing time.”
Mutter, who started at defensive end and fullback at East, will be a defensive tackle at Glenville.
With that in mind, he’s increasing his weight from 235 to 265.
“They want me to come in at 265 and I’m at 260 now,” Mutter said. “I’m on a regimented diet. I’m trying to put on the weight the right way, through muscle mass.”
Last year, Mutter earned second-team all-state honors on defense after accounting for 89 tackles, including for 11 for losses of 72 yards, and five sacks.
Mutter had 187 career stops and 19 career sacks.
He was also a second-team All-Mountain State Athletic Conference pick.
“That’s one thing that really helped me,” Mutter said of the MSAC. “We played against some of the best competition in the state. I think seven of the 10 teams we played were playoff teams.”
The Spartans finished the year with a 2-8 mark.
“It was tough at times, but I always played hard and did the best I could,” Mutter said. “I’m proud of the way my career turned out.”
He said a chance to go to a winning program was a key in his deciding on Glenville.
“It was the total package,” Mutter said. “I really liked the school, the sports facilities, the coaches and the players who are returning and the direction the program is going.”
Glenville was 9-2 last year and lost to Shepherd 34-13, a loss that cost the Pioneers a playoff berth.
He also likes Fiddler’s track record. As a prep coach, Fiddler led Moorefield to six state titles.
“He’s won some state championships,” Mutter said. “He knows how to win.”
Mutter plans to major in pre-law and hopes to become a sports agent after he graduates.
