Woodrow Wilson girls get 7th consecutive win

The tide is turning at Woodrow Wilson.

“We’re starting to hold on to leads,” coach Bernie Bostick said Friday after his Flying Eagles defeated Parkersburg 55-41 at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center.

Woodrow (8-8) jumped to a 15-point advantage midway through the second quarter and never let it slip below 10.

It was the Flying Eagles’ seventh consecutive victory after a 1-8 start.

“It’s been a slow progression, but our girls are coming together,” Bostick said. “We were losing close games. Now we’re winning close games.”

The Flying Eagles never trailed. They led 8-1 early on a basket apiece from their guard quartet of Alexis Allen, Haley Snyder, Olivia Moore and Shaitece Trigg.

Meanwhile, Parkersburg (7-12) seemingly couldn’t buy a shot.

Jumpers or layups, they just wouldn’t fall.

“We had the same percentage we’ve been shooting the last five games: Terrible,” coach Kenny DeMoss said. “We’ve lost five in a row and it’s because of shooting.”

The Big Reds’ offensive woes continued as Woodrow went on a 13-0 run late in the first quarter and early in the second to go up 21-6.

With center Ashley Chipps controlling the boards, Woodrow had a chance to blow the game open.

The Flying Eagles were hampered by turnovers, however, and the hustling Big Reds narrowed the gap to 12, 26-14, by halftime.

“There’s no doubt we’re a good defensive team,” DeMoss said. “But on offense, we’re in a funk.

“We held (No. 3) Parkersburg South to 16 points in one half, but we only scored eight ourselves.”

Parkersburg tried different combinations in the second half, utilizing its entire bench, but Woodrow’s balanced attack answered every run.

Senior guard Haley Snyder finished with 13 points and five steals.

“Haley wasn’t hitting her (trademark) three-point shots, but she was still the leading scorer,” Bostick said. “She’s our senior leader who does all the right things.”

Chipps had 11 points and 12 rebounds, while Moore scored nine points and had five steals and four rebounds.

“Ashley had a great game on the boards,” Bostick said. “Olivia is probably averaging in double figures our last four or five games. She’s coming on strong.”

Trigg came off the bench to score 10 points, including a pair of threes. Allen, the hustling point guard, was in foul trouble but finished with seven points and three steals.

Tori Wilson was the only Big Red to score more than five points. She netted 14.

Woodrow hosts St. Albans on Monday.
