MORGANTOWN — West Virginia’s 12th-ranked football team came into the 2005 season determined to go undefeated.

But Virginia Tech, now ranked fifth in the nation, exploded that dream with a 34-17 victory here Oct. 1.

So the Mountaineers now have a revised goal: Finish the year undefeated in the Big East.

Center Dan Mozes said, “We’ve already won the conference championship outright. But we’re going down to South Florida on Saturday and play as if it’s for the title.

“It’s our intention to go undefeated in the league. That’s the motivation we have.”

Mozes, a 6-foot-4, 290-pound junior, is the leader of WVU’s crack offensive line. He started at guard his first two years before switching this season.

He thinks the offensive line’s performance in Thanksgiving night’s 45-13 victory over old rival Pitt was probably its finest in a long time.

The coaches chose all five starters as co-offensive champions of the week for enabling WVU to rush for a season’s high 451 yards.

“It’s the first time since I’ve been here that they’ve cited all five offensive linemen for the award,” Mozes said.

“But I wasn’t really surprised. The last three or four games, we started dominating the whole contest by controlling the running game. We showed that we could run the ball from the start.

“Nobody has been able to stop us since then. Up front, we just do what we know we have to do. We established the run on the second series against Pitt and never let up.”

Mozes said the Mountaineers are going to play against USF as though the Big East title were still undecided.

“We’re facing a great team,” he stated. “We want our record to be 10-1, including a perfect 7-0 in the Big East.

“No one on the team is satisfied. All of us want another victory. It doesn’t matter to us that South Florida lost at Connecticut.”

Mozes thinks it’s kind of funny that the Mountaineers will be going from playing Pitt on a 7-degree wind-chill-factor night to playing at USF in 70 degrees.

“That’s a big difference,” he said. “But it will be nice going down there and playing in a great stadium against a great team.”

Saturday’s game will not be televised.
