Patriots Stump Sherman 76-49

Senior’s 32 pace Independence’s victory in opener

Anthony Stump left Independence’s fans happy.

Sherman was a different matter.

“I don’t think double-0 missed a shot,” Tide coach Chris Duncan said after Stump scored 32 points in the season-opening 76-49 Patriot victory. “When you get a hand up in somebody and they still make it, I don’t know what else you can do.”

Stump actually did miss several times — he was 14-of-23 from the floor — but Indy coach Chad Perkins wasn’t complaining.

“There wasn’t one bad shot out of the 23,” Perkins said. “And even when he was really hot, his first look was to the post to Colton Ratcliff.”

Together, Stump and Ratcliff dominated the game. Ratcliff, a 6-foot-6 senior center, scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

But Stump was the show, particularly in the third quarter when the 6-3 senior forward netted 20 points.

“Anthony took what the defense gave him and made some really great plays,” Perkins said. “But you have to give our guards credit. He had the hot hand and Ethan Wood and Tony Johnson got him the ball when he needed it.”

Wood finished with seven assists, four steals and six points. He helped key a defense that held Sherman to less than 12 points in three of the four quarters.

The Tide did not score until Justin Woodrum hit a jumper at the 3:05 mark of the first quarter.

“We played real nice defense,” Perkins said. “There was a lot to be happy about tonight.”

Sherman, which played without standout forward Jacob Rollo, got 11 points from Colby Treadway and nine each from Woodrum and Eric Davis.

“We missed Jacob on the boards, but that’s no excuse,” Duncan said. “Somebody has to step up and fill the void.

“They (Patriots) killed us on the boards and we gave them too many second shots.”

A couple of stickbacks were from Stump, who had eight rebounds on the night.

Last season he played point guard for Independence.

“We moved him to his natural position (small forward),” Perkins said. “It took a lot of responsibility from him. He can take what comes to him now and not worry about running the show.”

He also liked Ratcliff’s game inside.

“Colton is pretty good right now, but there’s a lot of untapped potential,” he said of the big man. “The sky’s the limit if he wants it.”

Independence remains home to host Mount View Friday. Sherman plays St. Marys today in Charleston at the Hoops Classic.
