Mountain State bombs Salem

From staff reports
For The Register-Herald

SALEM — Faced with Salem International’s zone defense Thursday night, Mountain State University just did what comes natural.

Bombs away!

The NAIA No. 1-ranked Cougars shot over the zone, drilling 18 3-point goals while rolling to a 99-82 victory at T. Ed Davis Gymnasium.

MSU (11-0) shot 51 percent (18 of 35) from beyond the 3-point arc.

“They came out in a zone and we hit 12 threes in the first half,” coach Bob Bolen said. “We were really shooting the ball well and we were able to get another win.”

The Cougars led 55-36 at halftime.

Adron Marshall paced the MSU attack with 25 points. He averages 16.3.

James Spencer followed with 23 points, while Jason McGriff had 13 and Ricky Jackson scored 11.

Salem International (0-5) got 22 points from Chris Carey, son of West Virginia University women’s basketball coach and former Salem men’s coach Mike Carey.

Curtis Dorsey tallied 21 points while Anthony King had 14 and Rashard Petty contributed 12.

The game marked the 350th career victory for Bolen, the 2004 NAIA Coach of the Year.

“I didn’t even know it,” he said of the milestone. “I’m just happy to be 11-0 at the break.

“We’ll take a few days off now and try to regroup after the Christmas break and get the ball rolling again.”

MSU will host Ohio State-Marion at 4 p.m. Dec. 29.
