Class A Championship

Williamstown 23, Madonna 7

WHEELING — Cameron Powell ran for 234 yards and two touchdowns to lead Williamstown to a 23-7 win over Madonna in the Class A championship game Saturday night.

Williamstown earned its first state football title after losing to Wheeling Central in the championship game the past three seasons. The win also marked the first time since 1995 that a team other than Wheeling Central or Moorefield has won the Class A title.

Top-seeded Williamstown (13-1) piled up 309 rushing yards on a snow-covered field at Wheeling Island Stadium.

No. 7 Madonna (13-1) was held to 88 total yards, including minus-1 yard rushing.

Williamstown scored first on its opening drive with eight straight running plays and Powell’s first score from 2 yards out. Madonna countered with a 69-yard kickoff return by Connor Arlia, who then caught a 23-yard TD pass from Sal Conti on fourth down to tie the score at 7-7.

Matt Hendrickson scored on a 5-yard run on Williamstown’s next possession, but the extra point kick was blocked by Arlia.

Conti, who was 4-of-7 for 76 yards and one touchdown, injured his right knee midway through the second quarter, and the Blue Dons were unable to produce much offense the rest of the game.

Class AAA championship

South Charleston 39, George Washington 8

WHEELING — Tyler Harris accounted for four touchdowns and led South Charleston to a 39-8 victory over Kanawha County rival George Washington for the West Virginia Class AAA state title Saturday at Wheeling Island Stadium.

Harris had 154 yards passing and a touchdown pass to go along with a 151 yards rushing and three ground scores for South Charleston’s first state title since 1994.

No. 1 South Charleston (14-0) and No. 2 George Washington (12-2) are located only five miles apart but had to make the 180-mile trip to Wheeling for the championship game on a snowy afternoon.

Aaron Slusher finished with 71 yards rushing and one touchdown for South Charleston, which held George Washington to only 30 yards rushing.

South Charleston jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead with its first two possessions starting in George Washington territory. Following a fumble on the first play by the Patriots, the Black Eagles capped a 46-yard drive with a 5-yard TD run by Harris. South Charleston’s next drive ended with Slusher’s leaping 10-yard score.
