Three area teams alive for playoffs’ second round

From staff reports

And then there were three.

When the second round of the West Virginia high school playoffs are contested this weekend, three of the region’s teams will be looking to continue on. Richwood and Fayetteville are still alive in Class A, while PikeView remains in double-A.

No. 7 Fayetteville (9-2) will travel to second-rated Man (10-1) Friday night. Unbeaten Richwood (11-0), the third seed, will host No. 6 Wirt County (9-2) Saturday.

PikeView (8-3), 12th in Class AA, will make the long trip to No. 4 Frankfort (10-1) Friday.

All games will kick off at 7:30 p.m.

Fayetteville eked out a 23-20 win over Wahama in the first round. A 16-yard touchdown connection from the brother combination of quarterback MichaelAngelo Hernandez and receiver Hunter Hernandez with 6:28 to play gave the Pirates the win.

The Pirates lost to Man 23-6 on Oct. 2.

Richwood continued with its improbable season with a 44-26 win over Pendleton County. The Lumberjacks scored on a flea flicker on the game’s first play and never looked back. Dustin Brown and Sam Tindal rushed for 98 and 97 yards, respectively.

A 34-21 upset win over fifth-rated Westside propelled PikeView into the second round. The Panther defense pitched a shutout in the second half. Travis Whitten, Westside’s Kennedy Award candidate, was held to under 100 yards.
