Wood rushes for two TDs in Woodrow’s 33-14 win

FAIRLEA — There was nothing wrong with Greenbrier East’s effort. Woodrow Wilson simply proved too good.

The Flying Eagles went ahead 26-0 in the first half, then held on for a 33-14 victory over rival Greenbrier East Friday at Spartan Stadium.

Vashawn Wood rushed for 119 yards and two touchdowns, and quarterback Ryan Stafford found David Allen for a 50-yard TD pass on Woodrow’s fourth offensive play of the game.

The defense, meanwhile, kept the Spartans scoreless until the fourth quarter as the Class AAA No. 16 Eagles won their second straight road game and improved to 5-3.

“Our defensive coaches had a good game plan and came up with some things throughout the game,” Woodrow head coach John H. Lilly said.

Lilly said the team wanted to start fast. That was accomplished, as Woodrow scored on four of its five possessions in the first half.

Stafford’s touchdown to Allen got the Eagles started. Allen got behind the East defense and was all alone to catch the pass and sprint to the end zone.

“That was just a good call, good pass, good execution,” Lilly said.

Three different players scored for the Eagles in the second quarter. Rakeem Fowlkes scored on a 16-yard run on the first play of the second quarter, fullback Josh Williams exploded through the middle for a 30-yard TD and Wood scored his first touchdown from two yards out with 38 seconds left before halftime.

Wood’s touchdown came one play after he was tripped up on what looked to be an 80-yard pass play from Stafford. Wood caught a screen pass and got himself free down the right sideline. But Greenbrier East’s Travis Butts chased him down at the 2.

“Our kids came back and never stopped fighting,” Spartans coach Mike Michael said.

Nathan Lilly rushed for a game-high 149 yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown. He also scored a two-point conversion after Brandon Dolan’s 35-yard touchdown catch from freshman quarterback Clay Ayers.

The Spartans (1-8) were not totally dominated. They moved the ball into Woodrow territory on five of six first-half drives, but turned the ball over twice and made drive-killing mistakes on the others.

“That has been the story of our season,” Michael said. “We get some momentum and then we give up one big play that kills it.

“They just have so many skill people that we could not (afford to) make a false step.”

Stafford was 5-of-8 passing for 150 yards for Woodrow. Wood added a 13-yard scoring run in the fourth.

The Eagles play their final home game against George Washington on Halloween night, while East finishes its season at Princeton.
