Beavers convincing in 53-20 win over Oak Hill

By Bob Redd
For The Register-Herald

OAK HILL — The Bluefield Beavers again struck early and often to beat the Oak Hill Red Devils 53-20 at John P. Duda Stadium.

Brad Fox put Bluefield on the board with a 34 yard run with 10:48 on the clock in the opening quarter. The point-after failed. Fox’s run capped a five play 66 yard drive.

After a three and out Jake Lilly and Marcus Patterson connected on a 49-yard pass play that made it 12-0. Andrew Shaw booted the point to give the Beavers a 13-0 lead at the 7:32 mark of the opening quarter.

Patterson found the end zone on a seven-yard run with 1:06 to go in the period to make it 19-0 as the kick again failed.

Alex Morris picked off a Kyalo Bradford pass at the 32 and returned it 27 yards to just inside the five yard line. Jake Lilly put Bluefield up 25-0 on a three yard keeper and Justin Mariotti kicked the point to make it 26-0 with 11 ticks left on the first quarter clock.

Bluefield gained 181 yards in the first quarter and Oak Hill had one yard of total offense.

Oak Hill took the ensuing kickoff and had its best drive of the game. Going under center and using two fullbacks and a tailback, the Red Devils drove from their own 32 to the Bluefield 15 before they turned the ball over on downs.

The Beavers’ final score of the first half came on a 68-yard pass from Lilly to Micah Green. The kick failed and Bluefield’s lead was 32-0.

Levi Beckett, who suffered a broken collarbone in the Charlotte Country Day School game on Sept. 17, returned to the field late in the second quarter.

Oak Hill got on the board with a 34 yard halfback pass from Deandre Leonard to Jack Flournoy with 7:57 to go in the third. The two-point conversion failed.

Bluefield answered on its first play after the kickoff when Lilly scampered 65 yards for another score. Shaw booted the point to make it 39-6.

Trey Williams recovered an Oak Hill fumble at the six on the last play of the third and on the first play of the fourth Byron Steptoe ran six yards for the score. Shaw’s extra point made it 46-6.

Oak Hill recovered a fumble on the Beavers four and on fourth down Derek McGuffin bulled over for one yard for the touchdown. Bradford passed to Leonard for the point after.

Bluefield’s final score came on a 56-yard run by Steptoe with 4:48 left in the game. Oak Hill scored its final points on a 45-yard pass from Leonard to Flournoy with 3:35 to play.

Brad Fox led Bluefield with 82 yards, Lilly ran for 76 yards. Lilly passed for 124 yards in the game.
